When the United States dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 at 8:15 a.m., the bomb was detonated 150 metres above ground so that the subsequent shockwave would instantly decimate the buildings in the city. This was one of the few buildings that survived (barely) and it is now the only building still standing from that period. The people inside at the time were killed instantly as the atomic bomb raised temperatures in the city to a horrid 4,000°C. The building is preserved as a graphic reminder of the terrible disaster and as a symbol of Japan’s commitment to world peace.
