Teramachi Street ShopsPrevious25 of 94Next

Teramachi is a covered street (though vehicles aren’t really allowed) and it’s lined with hundreds of shops and restaurants. This is where you’ll find most of the souvenir shops in Kyoto but it’s also where the locals buy clothes, gadgets, beauty supplies, produce, and various services. Teramachi is also lined with temples and its name actually means “temple town” because General Toyotomi Hideyoshi had some mandate in the 15th or 16th century to line this street (or maybe it was all of Kyoto or even all of Japan) with temples.
