The Sublime O-Torii GatePrevious6 of 94Next

Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island is considered one of the three most scenic places in Japan. The shrine is very old, circa 1200 A.D., and the sense of history you get from walking the grounds is majestic. O-Torii gate stands in the water in front of the shrine and was painted in a vermillion colour to ward off evil spirits from the sea. Unfortunately, we couldn’t explore all the scenic beauty on the island because we were on our way to Osaka later that afternoon, but we still spent a couple of hours there and it was one of the highlights of the trip.
